152 E 94th St | Upper East Side
This beautiful pre-war building completed in 1937 sits slightly below street level, with natural light only entering through the front foyer doors, making the interior feel dim. The existing table lamps weren’t effective, so we focused on enhancing the space by adding shaded linen sconces on three walls and four crystal and glass tubular sconces flanking the elevators to add a little glamour to the space.
Picture moldings were added to dress up the walls, brass radiator grills were restored, and we opted for a black and cream palette to create an elegant, Upper East Side aesthetic. The furniture and new front desk maintained classic lines and sophistication.
In the hallways, we used a reproduction wallcovering that mimics the texture of a period silk slub. The door frames were accented in black, while the doors themselves featured a deep blue-green tone. Our goal was to complement the existing terrazzo floors, which were polished to their lightest possible color, and brighten the space. Since the concrete ceilings prevented adding new light fixture locations, we selected fixtures that cast light not only down but also across the ceiling and walls. The milk glass and brass ceiling fixtures tied in with the period brass hardware on the doors, completing the cohesive design.
